About Move A Mate

Move A Mate started as an idea - "create a project around something that you are passionate about getting out into the community".

For me, it HAD to be about physical activity.

It's the reason I get out of bed every morning, my dharma or purpose.

I am a physiotherapist who gets to remove people's barriers to fulfilling on their physical activity goals.

I am a group fitness instructor who enables people to participate safely, effectively and enjoyably (arguably!) in physical activity.

I am a passionate advocate for inclusive physical activity - ie. There is no RIGHT or WRONG form of physical activity and it should be open to ALL people.

My stand for physical activity for EVERYONE came after my attendance at a sports medicine lecture which highlighted that despite the wealth of evidence that exercise is good for you (in many cases better than medicine) the mean community fitness level continues to decline.

One day of physical inactivity has an equivalent effect on your health as smoking 3 cigarettes - and we ALL know that's bad for us!

This is a crisis.

But how was I going to reach beyond the people I have direct contact with at work and in the community? Nearly all of them are getting the minimum requirement of 20 mins of physical activity per day!

To expand my influence I needed a bigger platform and an army of like-minded people - Move A Mate.

The project goal is to create change in physical activity levels nationally - the possibility of the project is empowerment and vitality for physically inactive Australians.

By enrolling the physically active community to take on "moving" a physically inactive "mate" for a minimum of 20 mins per day we can change community fitness levels!

Do you have a mate who could be more physically active? Register now and invite them to join the project. Let's build a fitter Australia one mate at a time!
